Dear lover of libraries –
It’s been a busy couple of weeks, and we’d like to bring you up to date with all that’s been happening. We received forceful endorsements from Art Spiegelman, Junot Diaz and other literary powerhouse supporters, we’ve received great press, and we want you to know about a rally this Tuesday organized by our allies Citizens Defending Libraries at the Brooklyn Public Library trustees meeting (see the bottom of this message). While branch libraries across the city are starving for resources, the Central Library Plan gobbles up taxpayer monies better spent elsewhere, making destructive changes to the 42nd Street building in order to satisfy the vanity of trustees/donors.
First, thanks to your help we recently sent our 5000th email to Mayor de Blasio! Can you help us further by sharing news of our email campaign with your friends on Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter; via your school list, church bulletin, union newsletter, neighborhood listserv or book club; with your family or with students? Let’s aim high and go for 10,000 emails!
We’ve recently received marvelous statements of support from pulitzer prizewinners Junot Diaz, David Levering Lewis, Art Spiegelman, and Edmund Morris, and prominent writers such as Lydia Davis, Jonathan Lethem, and Hettie Jones. More to come! A list of supporters along with some of their statements can be found here:
The endorsements received excellent coverage in the Daily News:
The Guardian newspaper published an outstanding op-ed about the NYPL fight which received widespread attention and revealed the NYPL’s plans to many people for the first time:
The Illuminator Collective did some spectacular night-time work for us, projecting messages such as “Mayor de Blasio Please Save NYPL” and “Save Our Stacks” directly onto the 42nd Street and Mid-Manhattan Libraries. Photos here:
A behind-the-scenes report by WNYC here:
Lots of wonderful people turned out in the rain outside the NYPL trustees meeting to demand that NYPL’s wasteful and destructive plan be stopped! Photos here:
And if you missed the chance to be heard at the NYPL trustees meeting, then please come to the rally organized by Citizens Defending Libraries outside the Brooklyn Public Library trustees meeting this Tuesday, April 8. Join them to protest the sale and shrinkage of libraries, and in particular the proposed sale of the Pacific and Brooklyn Heights branches!
Tuesday, April 8th, 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM Rain or Shine
